Pre-distribution in practice: economic security and resilient communities

Growing wealth inequality, economic uncertainty and increasing dissatisfaction with the current economic system raise an important question: how can we create a fairer economy that will ensure greater economic security for individuals and contribute to the development of more resilient communities?

In this podcast clip When solidarity becomes a system Maša Petrovič, a researcher at the Institute for Economic Democracy (IED), discusses the important role that redistribution mechanisms can play in improving the existing economic system.

Unlike redistribution, which reduces inequality through the subsequent redistribution of income and wealth, predistribution focuses on a fairer distribution right from the process of creating economic value. One specific example is employee ownership, which enables employees to acquire, in addition to their wages, a share in the ownership of companies and a share in the benefits of their successful operations.

The discussion highlights how more widely dispersed ownership can contribute to individuals’ long-term economic security, reduce wealth inequality and help retain the value created within local communities.

Pre-distribution thus represents one of the concrete approaches to the gradual creation of a fairer, more inclusive and more resilient economic system.
